HPU Invites Research Proposals on Indo-Tibetan Linkages Along Border
Shimla, April 23,
Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) has issued a call for research project proposals focusing on Indo-Tibetan linkages across various domains along the Himachal Pradesh border, signalling a renewed academic push into historically and strategically significant regions.
According to an official communication dated April 21 from the Office of the Dean of Studies, the initiative follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between HPU and the Indian Army to promote studies, research, and faculty exchange programmes.
The university has been tasked with inviting preliminary proposals for scrutiny, after which shortlisted projects would be forwarded to the Indian Army for funding consideration.

The proposal call has been circulated to all teaching departments, institutes, and centres within the university, with faculty members given a week to submit their research ideas. The move is aimed at fostering interdisciplinary research that sheds light on historical, cultural, and socio-economic ties across the Indo-Tibetan frontier.
The key areas of focus include historical archival research, ethnographic studies, toponymy and linguistic mapping, monastic networks, and narrative-building strategies for public engagement. Specific inputs suggest examining colonial records, monastery archives, trade routes, oral histories, and patterns of cultural exchange over time.
The initiative also emphasises community engagement, encouraging researchers to collaborate with local populations, Tibetan refugee communities, and monastic institutions. Policy-oriented outputs, including briefs on heritage protection, sustainable border tourism, and livelihoods, are expected to be part of the research outcomes.
University officials indicated that this effort aligns academic inquiry with national priorities, particularly in border regions where cultural continuity and strategic awareness intersect. The programme is likely to generate valuable insights into the region’s layered history while contributing to policy and development discourse.
The R&D on the India Tibetan Borders linkage likely to explore uncharted domain sofar remained under the shadow of prolonged border dispute for almost 75 yrs or more. This region carries a legacy of two thousand year old rise and fall of Buddhism in the Indian continent and far off Trans-Himalayan borders.
