Nahan, Aug 22
A tragic industrial accident at the Sabu Tor Rebar Factory in Kala Amb’s Trilokpur Road industrial area on Thursday morning claimed the life of one worker and left another critically injured, reigniting concerns about safety standards in steel units operating in the region.

The mishap occurred around 9:25 am during the morning shift, when workers were feeding raw material into the furnace. According to police reports, the crane transporting a bucket of molten iron malfunctioned after a gear in its chain slipped. The molten metal spilled, fatally burning one worker on the spot and severely injuring another, who was rushed to Narayangarh Hospital in critical condition.

Police personnel led by Station House Officer Kanwar Kulwant Singh reached the site soon after the incident. He stated that a detailed inquiry is underway to ascertain whether negligence or mechanical failure was responsible.

The accident triggered a protest by factory workers, who blocked the road demanding stronger safety measures and accountability from the management. “This is not just an accident, it’s a question of workers’ safety inside these units. Such incidents could be prevented with proper checks and equipment maintenance,” one of the protesting workers said.

The incident has once again highlighted the occupational hazards faced by labourers in Himachal’s industrial belts, where steel and rebar manufacturing units operate under challenging conditions. Workers’ unions have long demanded regular safety audits, adequate training, and modern equipment to minimize the risks associated with handling molten metal.

Authorities have assured that the matter is being investigated and action will follow based on findings. Meanwhile, the injured worker continues to battle for life in the hospital.
