Shimla, June 9
Bollywood actress and newly elected Member of Parliament (MP) Kangana Ranaut has requested increased security following an altercation with a CISF staff member at Chandigarh Airport. The incident, in which Ranaut was reportedly slapped, has prompted her to seek protection from the Himachal Pradesh police.
In a formal letter to Himachal Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Atul Verma, Ranaut detailed the assault that occurred while she was preparing to board a flight to Delhi. She urged the DGP to provide her with security given her recent election as an MP and the associated risks.
Ranaut emphasized the severity of the situation, noting that her current lack of official parliamentary security, due to not yet having taken the oath of office, leaves her vulnerable. However, a former IAS officer clarified that her election certificate alone entitles her to protection, suggesting that immediate measures should be implemented.
Responding to her concerns, DGP Verma assured that the state law and order unit would evaluate the threat level and take appropriate steps to ensure her safety. He confirmed that provisions for her security would be arranged based on the assessment.
The actress has previously encountered security threats, including an incident during her election campaign in Kaza, Spiti district, which led to an FIR against Congress party members. Ranaut’s public stance on various issues, such as her support for the three farm laws and criticism of the farmers’ protests and the Dalai Lama, has made her a controversial figure, potentially increasing her security risks.
Ranaut’s followers on social media were quick to react to the Chandigarh Airport incident, with many expressing outrage and debating the appropriate response to the CISF staff involved.
