As a philanthropist, Rao supported education for underprivileged students, fostering their independence. His editorials advocated for free speech and democratic principles within the bounds of journalistic ethics. Rao’s legacy includes a vision document emphasizing impartiality, integrity, and accuracy, principles he reiterated in every meeting.

His demise leaves a void in Indian media, which has seen its rankings decline. Despite this, his influence as a pioneer of electronic news channels and Film City endures.
