Shimla, June 9
Ramoji Rao, the visionary Chairman of the Ramoji Group, profoundly impacted Indian media. Known as Chairman Garu, his foresight and unique approach revolutionized journalism in India. He championed storytelling in native languages, enhancing the reach and relevance of news for diverse audiences through platforms like Eenadu and ETV Bharat.
Until his last breath, Rao remained actively involved in ETV Bharat, guiding its editorial direction. His six-year collaboration with Bilal Bhat, Network Editor at ETV Bharat, highlighted Rao’s innate creativity and insatiable curiosity. These traits, combined with meticulous planning, made him a successful entrepreneur. Rao’s strategic embrace of digital media led to the creation of ETV Bharat, a comprehensive digital platform offering content in 13 Indian languages. He equipped a vast network of reporters with mobile devices and video editing tools, ensuring real-time news delivery from any location.
Rao’s commitment to journalistic integrity was unwavering. He emphasized people-centric journalism and demanded that new leaders prove their expertise through hands-on experience. His mentoring produced numerous journalists and filmmakers, instilling in them the values of balanced judgment and objective decision-making. Rao’s communication skills were exceptional, and he prioritized discussions on people-centric issues, demonstrating his respect for targeted journalism.
As a philanthropist, Rao supported education for underprivileged students, fostering their independence. His editorials advocated for free speech and democratic principles within the bounds of journalistic ethics. Rao’s legacy includes a vision document emphasizing impartiality, integrity, and accuracy, principles he reiterated in every meeting.
Rao’s contributions to media, both as a businessman and a professional, were marked by honor, integrity, and professionalism. His demise leaves a void in Indian media, which has seen its rankings decline. Despite this, his influence as a pioneer of electronic news channels and Film City endures. His achievements continue to inspire free, fearless, and objective journalism, motivating future generations. Noted author Arundhati Roy praised Rao, highlighting his formidable impact on Indian media. Rest in peace, Ramoji Rao; your legacy will always be remembered.
