Kinnaur district gears up for monsoon, prioritizes safety measures
Shimla, June 19
With the monsoon season fast approaching, the district administration of Kinnaur has launched a comprehensive preparation campaign to minimize the impact of natural hazards. In a recent meeting, Deputy Commissioner Torul S. Ravish instructed all concerned departments to prioritize necessary measures and take prompt action.
Recognizing the district’s vulnerability to landslides, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized the urgent need to inspect and repair the early warning system equipment installed in landslide-prone areas such as Batseri, Nigulseri, Kupa, Urni Dhank, Purvani Jhula, and Pagal Nala. To ensure the effectiveness of these systems, local representatives and voluntary organizations have been urged to raise awareness among the residents.
Addressing the potential risks posed by heavy rainfall, the Special Area Development Authority has been directed to ensure the thorough cleaning of all drains in the Sada area before the monsoon season commences. This proactive step aims to minimize flooding and its adverse effects on the local population.

To safeguard the well-being of the community during the monsoon season, the Food and Civil Supplies Department has been entrusted with the task of ensuring the uninterrupted supply of essential commodities until the first week of July, especially in areas susceptible to excessive rainfall.
In anticipation of emergencies, a dedicated control room has been established at the district headquarters, operating round-the-clock. Individuals can report any urgent information by dialing the toll-free number 1077 during times of disaster. The District Disaster Management Committee has been instructed to procure necessary materials promptly to effectively respond to potential disasters.
Kinnaur district, nestled in the scenic landscapes of Himachal Pradesh, has long grappled with the recurring challenge of landslides. This region, along with Chamba, Kullu, and parts of Kangra and Shimla, falls within Zone IV of earthquake-prone areas. In an effort to mitigate risks, the district administration is implementing measures to address the high vulnerability to earthquakes.
Sadly, the devastating consequences of natural hazards have claimed numerous lives in Kinnaur. Last year alone, more than 40 individuals lost their lives due to landslide-related incidents. The unique combination of geo-tectonic, geological, geomorphological, and climatic conditions in the district, compounded by human interventions, further amplifies the susceptibility to various disasters.
By taking proactive steps and prioritizing the safety and well-being of its residents, the district administration of Kinnaur is striving to create a more resilient community in the face of natural calamities. Additional Magistrate Pooh Vinay Modi, Sub-Divisional Magistrate Nichar Bimla Verma, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sonam Negi, officers and employees of Indo-Tibetan Border Police Force, Police, Graf, and various other departments remained present in the meeting.
