Landslide on NH-5, diverts vehicular traffic to NH-505 in Himachal Pradesh
Shimla, Sept 10,
In response to the closure of National Highway-5 (NH-5) at Nigulasri on September 8th, the District Administration of tribal district Lahaul-Spiti in Himachal Pradesh has taken measures to divert vehicular traffic to National Highway-505 via Chotta Dhara – Manali to destination.
A press release by SDM Kaza, Harsh Negi, reported that a significant portion (350-400 meters) of NH-5 has been damaged, with the road sinking due to a massive landslide. Consequently, all vehicular traffic, including those carrying LPG cylinders, fuel tankers, and essential daily supplies, has been rerouted to NH-505 to ensure the uninterrupted supply to Spiti sub-division and Kinnaur District.
Furthermore, ongoing road widening work between Kaza and Gramphoo may temporarily disrupt the movement of heavy vehicles and cause inconvenience to commuters. Additionally, trucks transporting apples and peas from Kinnaur will temporarily use NH-505.
In light of these developments, the Officer Commanding Gref is deploying machinery, equipment, and manpower to NH-505. Authorities have requested the Border Roads Organization (BRO) to assist in ensuring the smooth functioning of the highway, promptly clearing obstacles, and maintaining NH-505 operations round the clock.
The DSP and SHO Kaza have been instructed to conduct regular patrolling between Lossar and Chhota Dhara (RD 169) with a satellite phone, providing updates to the Control Center in Kaza (94599-00399, 89880-98072).
