Solan, Jan 14,
The District and Sessions Judge, Solan, Arvind Malhotra, sentenced Bhupender Kumar, 43, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for attempting uxoricide under Section 307 IPC and an additional 3 years under Section 457 IPC for housebreaking at night. He has also been ordered to pay a fine of ₹60,000.
The case pertained to the murder of Suman, Bhupender’s wife, at her mother’s residence in Village Damrog, Solan. District Attorney Sanjay Pandit shared details of the case, explaining that Bhupender, who served in the Home Guard, had a history of domestic violence. His repeated acts of abuse, particularly while intoxicated, led Suman to leave him and live with her mother, Pushpa Devi.
On the night of July 10, 2020, Bhupender arrived at Pushpa’s house in uniform and armed with his official firearm. Under the influence of alcohol, he fired shots at the house after being refused entry. Forcing his way inside, he fatally shot Suman near her heart. Despite efforts by Suman and her family to escape, the attack proved fatal.
Bhupender had been accompanied to the scene by co-accused Naresh Dutt, who was acquitted due to insufficient evidence. District Attorney Pandit called the judgment a landmark step in addressing domestic violence and holding perpetrators accountable, highlighting its importance in ensuring justice for victims and their families.
