Shimla, July 4: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Assistant Garrison Engineer of the Military Engineering Services (MES) posted in Manali, Himachal Pradesh, for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe of ₹93,000 from a contractor’s representative for clearing pending bills.
According to the CBI, the case was registered on July 3 following a complaint by a supervisor working with a contractor firm. The complainant alleged that the Assistant Garrison Engineer had demanded a bribe of ₹93,000 for processing and passing the firm’s bills.
As per the complaint, the supervisor had already paid ₹40,000 to the accused at his office on July 3. The official allegedly instructed him to return the next day with the remaining ₹53,000.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap on July 4. The agency said its team caught the accused red-handed while demanding the total bribe amount and accepting the remaining ₹53,000 from the complainant.
During the operation, the CBI also recovered the earlier payment of ₹40,000 from the accused’s residence in the MES area of Manali. A search of the premises was carried out, during which officials recovered around ₹10 lakh in cash. The agency said the search was continuing and the source of the recovered cash would be examined during the investigation.
The accused was taken into custody and is scheduled to be produced before the competent court in Shimla on July 5.
The CBI said the investigation is continuing to ascertain whether the accused was involved in similar instances of corruption or whether any other officials were connected with the alleged bribery.
The agency reiterated that it remains committed to taking strict action against corruption in public offices and urged citizens to report any such illegal demands by government officials.
