The Rajya Sabha polls for the 13 Rajya seats in six states which are falling vacant between April 2 to April 9 has been scheduled on March 31. Among these is the one seat in Himachal Pradesh which will fall vacant after retirement of current RS MP Anand Sharma on April 2 this year. In a press communique Praful Awasthi, Under secretary, Election Commission of India said that the notification for the same shall be issued on March 14. The last date for nomination will be March 21, wherein scrutiny of nomination shall be done on March 22 and last date for withdrawal of candidatures shall be allowed till March 24.
The poll scheduled are Assam 2 seats, Himachal Pradesh 1 seat, Kerala 3 seats, Nagaland 1 seat, Tripura 1 seat and Punjab 5 seats.
The polling shall take place between 0900 hours to 1600 hours on March 31, and counting shall be done on the same day at 1700 hours, he added. The commission has also directed the Chief secretaries of the concerned states to depute a senior officer to ensure that extant instructions regarding COVID-19 containment measures are complied with, he stated further.
” The commission has directed that for the purpose of making preference(s) on the ballot paper only integrated violet colour pen(s) of pre fixed specifications, provided by returning officer, shall be used. No other pen, under any circumstances, be used in above said election, cautioned the ECI order.
