Shimla, June 25
On Monday, premonsoon rains wreaked havoc in Himachal Pradesh, with the Gambhar pul area in Solan district bearing the brunt of the torrential downpour. The intense rainfall led to flash floods, inundating vast expanses and causing significant disruption to daily life.
The Meteorological Department reported that several regions across Himachal Pradesh experienced heavy rainfall. Notable among these were Shimla, which recorded 78 mm of rain, and Dharamshala, with 65 mm. In Solan district, the town of Solan itself received 72 mm of rainfall, exacerbating the flood situation in Gambhar.
The unexpected deluge resulted in the swelling of local rivers and streams, leading to flash floods that submerged homes, agricultural fields, and roads. Residents of Gambhar faced severe challenges as the rising waters disrupted electricity and water supply, leading to a temporary suspension of local transportation.
In addition to the rainfall data, maximum temperatures across the state showed considerable variation. Shimla registered a maximum temperature of 24°C, while Dharamshala recorded a slightly higher temperature at 27°C. Solan, which was severely affected by the floods, saw a maximum temperature of 26°C.
Authorities have initiated relief and rescue operations in the flooded areas, deploying teams to assist stranded residents and restore essential services. The state disaster management team is working closely with local authorities to assess the damage and provide immediate support to those affected.
Meteorologists have warned that more rainfall is expected in the coming days, urging residents to stay alert and take necessary precautions. The government has also advised tourists and locals to avoid venturing into vulnerable areas prone to landslides and flooding.
Sanjay Awasthi, MLA and Congress Party Working President, has expressed deep grief over the damage caused by heavy rains near Gamberpul on the Kunihar-Nalagarh road in the Arki assembly constituency of Solan district.
Awasthi has assured all possible financial help to the affected families, following heavy damage to a residential house due to the rains. He stated that an administrative team has been dispatched to assess the damage and has directed the administration to compensate for the losses. The state government has also promised extensive support to those affected.
The flash floods in Gambharpul highlight the unpredictable nature of premonsoon rains in Himachal Pradesh, underscoring the need for enhanced preparedness and robust infrastructure to mitigate such natural disasters in the future.
