A fresh western disturbance is likely to bring a wet spell to many parts of Himachal Pradesh on February 4 and 5, with light to moderate snowfall expected in the higher reaches and rainfall in lower areas. According to the meteorological department, a cyclonic circulation over West Afghanistan and Iran, combined with strong westerly jet streams, will influence the state’s weather over the next two days.
Snowfall is likely in Kinnaur, Lahaul-Spiti, and the upper reaches of Kangra, Chamba, Shimla, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Kullu districts. Meanwhile, light to moderate rainfall is expected in lower regions of Kangra, Chamba, Shimla, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Kullu from the afternoon of February 4 until late night on February 5, stated a media press release by IMD. Adding that, Solan, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, and Una may also experience light rainfall from the forenoon of February 4 until the morning of February 5.
Tourist destinations such as Kufri, Narkanda, Manali, Solang Valley, Dalhousie, and Sissu could see light to moderate snowfall, while Shimla city and nearby areas may receive light rain from the evening of February 4 until February 5 evening, informed the IMD release.
With snowfall and rain predicted, authorities have cautioned about possible disruptions, including slippery roads leading to vehicle skidding, low visibility, potential vehicle collisions, traffic congestion, and disruptions in essential services. Residents and travelers are advised to drive cautiously, limit outdoor activities during heavy snowfall, and follow government advisories for safety.
Temperature-wise, maximum temperatures are expected to drop by 4-5°C over many parts of the state on February 4-5, before rising again in the subsequent days, they informed. Minimum temperatures will rise by 2-4°C in the next 24 hours but are expected to fall again from February 5 onwards.
The weather department has also issued a Yellow Alert for thunderstorms and lightning in lower hills and mid-hill regions on February 4. Additionally, cold day conditions may prevail in some lower and mid-hill areas, urging people to take necessary precautions against the chilly weather. Authorities have advised residents and travelers to stay updated on weather developments and plan their activities accordingly.
