Shimla, May 10
The summer tourist season coupled with the weekend rush brought record traffic inflow into Shimla town, with around 18,821 vehicles entering the hill station through the Shoghi barrier on May 9 and 10, putting immense pressure on the city’s traffic management system.
According to a press release issued by District Police Shimla, the ongoing patchwork and repair work being carried out by the Public Works Department (PWD) on the Sanjauli route from Victory Tunnel to Lakkad Bazar further aggravated congestion in the town during the last two days.
Despite the unusually high traffic load, Shimla Police managed to maintain smooth vehicular movement through coordinated traffic regulation, real-time monitoring and strategic diversions at sensitive locations.
Traffic diversions were implemented at key congestion points including Shoghi, Tutikandi bifurcation, Victory Tunnel, Dhali Tunnel and Dhali Chowk to ease pressure on the main routes.
Police officials and jawans remained deployed continuously in the field to regulate traffic and minimise inconvenience to commuters and tourists.
The police said that officers and personnel discharged their duties with “full readiness, patience and dedication” during the peak tourist inflow.
