Shimla, March 3,
Lawyers in Shimla’s judicial complex, Chakkar, held a general house meeting in the bar room to protest against the proposed Advocate Amendment Bill. The meeting, which began at 10:20 AM and continued until 12:30 PM, saw strong opposition to the bill, with lawyers resolving to boycott all court work, except proxy-related tasks, for the day and the following day.
Following the meeting, the lawyers marched to the main gate of the judicial complex, chanting slogans against the bill. They raised voices against the Bar Council of India, the Law Ministry, and the central government, calling the proposed amendments a “black law” that threatens the independence of the legal profession. The protest, which saw participation from approximately 150 to 200 lawyers, concluded peacefully around 12:50 PM.
The demonstration was closely monitored by the in-charge of Baluganj Police Station, who was present at the site with his team to ensure law and order. The lawyers’ protest highlights the legal fraternity’s growing concerns over the central government’s attempts to interfere with the autonomy of the legal profession. The peaceful yet resolute protest underscores their commitment to safeguarding the independence of the judiciary and the legal system.
