Solan MC: Usha Sharma wins Mayor, BJP triumphs in Dy mayor race amid Congress discord
Shimla/Solan, Dec 7
The election for the positions of Mayor and Deputy Mayor in the Solan Municipal Corporation took place on Thursday. Additional Deputy Commissioner Solan, Ajay Yadav, announced the results, stating that Usha Sharma from Ward No. 12 was elected as the Mayor, securing 11 votes, while her rival candidate, Sardar Singh Thakur, received 06 votes.
Similarly, Meera Anand from Ward No. 13 emerged victorious in the Deputy Mayor election with 12 votes, defeating Sangeeta Thakur, who garnered 05 votes. Following their wins, the newly elected Mayor, Usha Sharma, and Deputy Mayor, Meera Anand, were administered the oath of office and secrecy by the authorized officer, Additional Deputy Commissioner Solan Ajay Yadav.
Notably, the ruling Congress faced a significant setback in today’s elections as the BJP successfully claimed the position of Deputy Mayor, attributed to intense infighting within the Congress. Despite multiple meetings involving three cabinet ministers—DR Shandil, Harshvardhan Chauhan, and Vikramaditya Singh—with Congress councillors, the party failed to maintain unity.
Buoyed by Meera Anand’s victory, the state BJP chief, Dr. Rajeev Bindal, led hundreds of supporters in a procession through the town to celebrate the triumph. The Congress leadership struggled to reach a consensus on its candidate, especially after Usha Sharma decided to contest the elections against Sardar Singh, a staunch loyalist of DR Shandil.
” Despite being in power and adopting all the tactics, the Congress party could not save this position. This clearly shows that the infighting of the Congress has now come out,” have stated BJP in a media statement.
