Chamba/Shimla, Aug 20,
Residents of Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district woke up to twin earthquakes in the early hours of Wednesday, adding to anxiety in a region already battered by adverse weather conditions.
The National Center for Seismology (NCS) reported that the first quake, measuring 3.3 magnitude, struck at 3:27 a.m. at a depth of 20 km. Less than an hour later, at 4:39 a.m., a stronger tremor of 4.0 magnitude jolted the district at a shallower depth of 10 km.
Though the shocks were felt in several parts of Chamba, officials confirmed that there were no reports of casualties or property damage. Deputy Commissioner Mukesh Roushan assured that the administration is monitoring the situation and urged residents not to panic.
The tremors follow a recent earthquake in the neighboring Kangra district, intensifying concerns about seismic activity in the hill state. Himachal Pradesh lies in a high-risk seismic zone, making it vulnerable to frequent quakes, though most remain mild to moderate in intensity.
Authorities have once again reminded people to stay alert, follow safety guidelines, and be prepared for emergencies.
