Two trekkers who lost their way while returning from the scenic Ghepan Lake trek in Lahaul-Spiti were rescued safely after an overnight search operation carried out by the district police with the support of multiple emergency agencies.
According to Lahaul-Spiti Police, an emergency call was received on helpline 112 on the evening of June 23 reporting that two trekkers had gone missing after darkness and difficult terrain caused them to lose their way while descending from Ghepan Lake.
Acting swiftly, the Lahaul-Spiti Police launched a search and rescue operation in coordination with the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA), the Fire Department, the Home Guard and local guides. Search teams continued the operation throughout the night despite challenging conditions in the high-altitude region.

The trekkers were eventually traced near a stream, around 11 kilometres from Sissu. Both were found safe and in good health. They were provided refreshments and necessary assistance before being transported safely to their destination.
Superintendent of Police Shivani Mehla said the successful operation reflected the prompt response, close coordination and dedication of all agencies involved in safeguarding the lives of tourists and local residents. She appreciated the efforts of the police personnel, DDMA, Fire Department, Home Guard volunteers and local guides who participated in the rescue.
The police advised trekkers and tourists to undertake mountain expeditions with proper planning, avoid trekking after dark and keep local authorities or family members informed about their travel plans. Visitors have also been urged to use the emergency helpline 112 in case of any distress.
The incident underscores the importance of coordinated emergency response in the rugged terrain of Lahaul-Spiti during the peak trekking and tourist season.
