US-Iran conflict pushing world economy into greater instability, CPI(M) accuseds Modi Govt to deviate from foreign policy
Shimla, June 18,
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) has expressed serious concern over the economic and political consequences of the escalating US-Iran conflict, alleging that the crisis is pushing the global economy towards greater instability while imposing a heavy burden on ordinary people in India.
The issue figured prominently during the two-day meeting of the CPI(M) State Committee held in Shimla on June 16 and 17. The meeting was chaired by State Secretariat member Onkar Shad and attended by Central Secretariat member Vikram Singh.
State Secretary Sanjay Chauhan presented the political and organisational report, while Vikram Singh briefed members on the party’s assessment of national and international developments.
The party adopted a resolution strongly condemning the US and Israeli military actions against Iran and criticised the Union Government for what it described as its silence and failure to pursue an independent foreign policy.
CPI(M) leaders said the conflict has triggered uncertainty in global energy markets, leading to rising fuel prices, inflation and fears of an economic slowdown across the world. Party said that Poor third world countries are in mid of deep crisis due to accute shortage of LPG, petroleum products, fertilizer.
They warned that India would face the impact in the form of increased prices of LPG, petrol and diesel, higher transportation costs, inflation and reduced employment opportunities.
The State Committee also expressed concern over the death of three Indian sailors aboard a commercial vessel in the Gulf of Oman during the ongoing hostilities.
Party leaders paid tributes to the deceased, including a young sailor from Himachal Pradesh, and demanded that the Government of India take immediate diplomatic steps to ensure that the bodies of the victims are brought back to the country without delay. The party criticised what it termed an inadequate response by the Centre in safeguarding the interests and security of Indian citizens working in the Gulf region.
Recalling the party’s opposition to the Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement during the UPA government, CPI(M) leaders said they had warned against strategic dependence on the United States. They drew parallels with Iran’s nuclear engagement with world powers and argued that despite pursuing diplomatic agreements, Iran was now facing military aggression. Party leaders said the developments vindicated their long-standing concerns regarding US foreign policy and interventionism.
The meeting also discussed plans to organise statewide protests and public awareness campaigns against the economic burden arising from the conflict. CPI(M) leaders said the people of India were already facing the consequences of rising prices, unemployment and what they described as anti-people economic policies of the Central Government. They alleged that the country’s foreign policy had increasingly tilted towards the United States and Israel, exposing India to the fallout of conflicts in which it had no direct stake.

The party reiterated that countries not involved in the conflict were nevertheless being forced to bear its economic costs through rising fuel and energy prices. It urged the Government of India to adopt an independent foreign policy, oppose military escalation in West Asia and work for peace and diplomatic resolution of disputes in the interest of the Indian people and global stability.
