Nauni University sees sharp Faculty-Administration face-off
Solan, Oct 5,
Tensions at Dr YS Parmar University of Horticulture and Forestry, Nauni, escalated sharply on Monday, with Vice-Chancellor Dr H.S. Baweja seeking police protection amid a confrontation with faculty members and protests by university employees outside his office.
The unusual turn of events came after a group of around four faculty members allegedly attempted to enter the Vice-Chancellor’s office, prompting Dr Baweja to remain inside and seek security assistance. The development has brought an increasingly strained relationship between the university administration and sections of its faculty and employees into the open.
Employees also gathered outside the VC’s office and staged a protest over notices issued by the university concerning non-employees.
As per the Vice Chancellor’s video statement, the incidence pertains to this morning around 1020 hours, when a few people were heard creating ruckus, outside his room and tried to break in. Baweja added that evaluating the situation security guards were called, who advised to lock himself in the room. ” I don’t know what their intention was, and why they tried to break the doors of my room,” stated Baweja. Adding, “i immediately called upon the Chief secretary, DGP-HP and SP Solan, who then sent the force for protection.”
While talking about the intentions of the protestors, the head of the institution stated that it was unknown, and now the police is initiating further enquiry.
Meanwhile, a separate dispute relates to Dr Ashu Chandel, Professor and Head of Basic Sciences. A complaint has reportedly been submitted to the Vigilance Bureau seeking an inquiry into her appointment. Dr Chandel has alleged that the present administration has questioned the legality of her appointment and recommended action against her. She is the wife of former Vice-Chancellor Dr Rajeshwar Chandel, whose tenure ended earlier this year.

Dr H.S. Baweja has been holding additional charge as Vice-Chancellor since May 2026 following the completion of Dr Rajeshwar Chandel’s tenure. A senior horticulture scientist, Baweja has previously served as Director of Horticulture in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. His tenure in Uttarakhand had also been subject to government-level scrutiny over allegations concerning departmental functioning, which were examined through official processes.
The latest confrontation comes amid continuing protests at the Nauni campus, including a separate student agitation in recent days.
