Shimla, Feb 17,
Meteorological experts have issued urgent warning as a formidable weather system gears up to unleash a barrage of rainfall and snowfall over the Western Himalayan region and adjoining plains of northwest India. The impending weather event, fueled by a potent Western Disturbance, is poised to bring a range of severe weather conditions across several states and subdivisions.
Amongst key forecast highlights, the IMD in a special message has stated that the Western Himalayan Region is expected to receive widespread light to moderate rainfall/snowfall, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning from February 17th to 20th. Heavy to very heavy rainfall/snowfall is likely at isolated places, with potential hailstorm activity in certain areas.
Informing about Himachal Pradesh the message stated that it is anticipated that progression of precipitation from light to moderate intensity may effect the State on February 17th onwards, culminating in very heavy rainfall/snowfall at isolated places on February 19th. Hailstorms are likely on February 18th and 19th, they claimed.
The State meteorological department has issued a yellow alert for 9 districts. The IMD alert warns of widespread precipitation in Himachal on February 18, 19 and 2. This includes all other districts barring Una, Bilaspur and Hamirpur. For these districts a yellow alert has been issued.
In the advisory they have informed that Heavy snow is likely to occur at isolated places from 18th Feb to 20th Feb in the high and mid hills of the state. Disruptions of essential services viz. water and electricity, communications and related services, may be possible. Visibility Conditions very likely to decrease and there they advise all to follow the guidelines issued by the concerned departments time to time.
In the past 24 hours no major changes had been recorded in the temperature. On February 16 the Lowest temperature was recorded at Kukumseri -07.90C. The Highest temperature was recorded at Una 26.6 0C.
