Shimla/Solan, July 1
Former Himachal Pradesh Health Minister and veteran Congress leader passed away after a prolonged illness in Delhi on Wednesday, bringing to an end an important chapter in the political and social history of the Baddi-Nalagarh region.
His death has been widely mourned across Himachal Pradesh, with leaders cutting across political affiliations paying tribute to his long public life and dedicated service.
A member of the erstwhile royal family of Handoor (Nalagarh), Raja Vijender Singh represented the Nalagarh Assembly constituency for more than two decades and remained one of the most prominent Congress leaders from the region.
During his political career, he served as the state’s Health Minister and was credited with strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding medical facilities in several parts of Himachal Pradesh.

Known for his humility, accessibility and commitment to public welfare, Raja Vijender Singh enjoyed respect across party lines. Despite his royal lineage, he was admired for his simple lifestyle and close connection with ordinary people. Beyond politics, he remained actively associated with educational, social and cultural initiatives and played an important role in preserving the heritage of the erstwhile Handoor princely state.
Even after retiring from active politics, he continued participating in public functions and guided several social and charitable organisations. Political leaders, former colleagues and residents described his demise as an irreparable loss to the state and remembered him as a dignified leader who successfully blended royal traditions with democratic values.
He is survived by his family and a large number of admirers. His last rites are expected to be attended by political leaders, members of former royal families and hundreds of mourners from across Himachal Pradesh.
