Shimla, Dec 29,
Himachal Pradesh is set to introduce strict regulations on the use of heavy-duty chain saws to combat illegal deforestation. Recognizing the devastating impact of these powerful machines, the State government, led by Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF) Pavnesh Kumar, plans to implement a mandatory licensing system for chain saw cutters, similar to firearms licensing.
Licenses will be issued based on the machine’s horsepower, with exemptions likely for smaller, domestic-use models. This move aims to limit the misuse of these tools by forest mafias while allowing legitimate users to operate within legal boundaries, emphasized PCCF Pavnesh Kumar

To facilitate the process, an online platform will be created for license applications, and individuals already using chain saws will be required to register with the local Divisional Forest Officer (DFO).
Panchayats will play a crucial role in disseminating information about the new rules and encouraging compliance.
It was informed that the government will also implement penalties for non-compliance, including the confiscation of unlicensed saws and fines.
This initiative while highlighting Himachal Pradesh’s commitment to preserving its valuable forest wealth also sets an important precedent for other states facing similar challenges.
