IMD sounds Orange alert in HP warns of landslides in 5 districts
Shimla, June 26
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued a fresh orange alert for the next 48 hours as monsoon activities are expected to be vigorous in Mandi, Kangra, and Chamba districts. The water levels in the Kullu, Shimla, Kangra, Beas, and Satluj rivers could rise, and the roads in Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Kangra, Mandi, and Kulu could become slippery, muddy, and prone to landslides, posing a significant risk due to poor visibility.
According to the meteorological bulletin released today, heavy to very heavy rainfall will continue in some areas of Una, Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur districts. The incessant rainfall over the past two days and the expected rainfall in the next 48 hours may trigger landslides, mudslides, and block roads in Bilaspur, Hamirpur, Chamba, Mandi, and Sirmaur districts. Additionally, the wet weather conditions are likely to increase water discharge or levels in the catchment areas of the Ravi River in Chamba, the Beas River in Kullu, Mandi, and Kangra, and the Satluj River in Shimla district. There is also a possibility of flash floods along local streams or rivulets in Kullu and Mandi districts. The orange alert and above warnings will remain in effect for the next 48 hours.
Due to numerous landslides, mudslides, and flash floods, the old Hindustan-Tibet NH-5 and Chandigarh-Manali NH-3 highways in the state have been disrupted, with boulders rolling down onto the roads. As a result, the Kullu and Mandi administrations are urging people to avoid unnecessary travel, areas prone to waterlogging, and vulnerable structures. Currently, four national highways have been affected by landslides and the collapse of retaining walls. In total, approximately 200 roads in the state have been impacted by landslides and heavy rainfall.

The inclement weather conditions may lead to the disruption of essential services, including power and communication. There is also a risk of flash floods along watersheds and other channels in Shimla, Mandi, Kullu, Sirmaur, and Solan districts. Additionally, roads may flood, leading to traffic congestion and occasional disruptions in electric supply. Furthermore, standing crops, fruits, and newly planted vegetation may sustain damage.
