Shimla, July 28
If you happen to meet a handsome young man with long hair, a wonderful smile, and a twinkle in his eyes, walking to his own tune, it might be Harsh Rathore of Shimla. At 30, this adventurous trekker embarked on a remarkable journey from Shimla to Leh on foot, covering some of the most rugged and inaccessible terrains of Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Starting his trek on July 11, 2024, Harsh, who works in a private company in Chandigarh, set out with a dream to create an identity among the people. His route took him through Bilaspur, Mandi, Kullu, Solang Nalla, and the Atal Tunnel, ultimately reaching Keylong on July 20. His journey didn’t stop there. The next morning, he continued towards Leh via Sarchu, covering about 50 kilometers per day. His goal was to reach Leh within five days, navigating passes ranging from 15,200 to 17,000 feet.
Harsh’s father, Sohan Singh Rathore, an advocate at the High Court of Himachal Pradesh, documented his son’s trek in a letter to the authorities. He emphasized the challenging and adventurous nature of Harsh’s journey, noting the difficult roads, low oxygen levels, and the necessity of crossing high-altitude passes. This letter served as a precautionary measure to ensure assistance in case of an emergency.
Harsh’s journey has been filled with a blend of solitude and warm encounters. He was welcomed by the Indian Armed Forces camp with great hospitality. His trek, which spans over 450 kilometers through the rugged terrains of Lahaul Spiti and Ladakh, has not only been a personal challenge but also a statement against the drug menace in the region. Harsh aims to inspire the youth to engage in positive and healthy pursuits.
His daily experiences include braving the heat, sun, rain, and storms, all while listening to music through his airphones. Near Ner Chowk, Harsh expressed his enjoyment of the journey and his plans to continue exploring after reaching Leh, depending on the weather patterns.
Harsh’s adventure stands as a testament to human endurance and the spirit of exploration. His journey is not just about reaching a destination but about the experiences, challenges, and connections made along the way. As he continues to scale the inaccessible, Harsh Rathore’s trek from Shimla to Leh will surely inspire many to pursue their dreams, no matter how challenging they may seem.
