Shimla, Nov 2,
The Shimla Nagrik Sabha has condemned the district administration’s decision to stop buses operating beyond 40 kilometres from entering the Old Bus Stand, calling it anti-people and arbitrary.
Sabha president Jagmohan Thakur and secretary Vivek Kashyap alleged that the move favours private bus operators while ignoring students, farmers and daily commuters from nearby rural areas who depend on these routes. “The administration acted unilaterally without consulting affected sections,” they said.
The Sabha said the order would burden students travelling to city schools and colleges, small farmers bringing vegetables and fruits to Shimla’s Sabzi Mandi, and employees who commute daily for work. “This decision will increase their travel costs and waste valuable time,” it added.
Rejecting the claim that large buses cause traffic congestion, the Sabha said the real reasons include unregulated parking, private buses stopping anywhere, and lack of adequate traffic police. It urged the administration to improve enforcement instead of punishing public transport users.
Warning of public protests, the Sabha demanded an immediate rollback of the order and better traffic management in Shimla. “If the government fails to withdraw this decision, we will launch a signature campaign and mass movement,” the Sabha said.
