Shimla, June 29
Following light rain and recent pre-monsoon showers that have made roads slippery across the hill town, Shimla Police on Monday appealed to motorists to exercise caution while driving and strictly follow traffic regulations to prevent accidents.
In a press communiqué, Superintendent of Police Garauv Singh said that traffic movement on all major roads and intersections in Shimla city remained normal and smooth as of 8 a.m. on Monday despite intermittent rainfall. He said vehicles were moving without any major hindrance and no significant inconvenience had been reported by either tourists or local residents.
However, the SP cautioned that the recent pre-monsoon spell, coupled with flashflood incidents in parts of the district, has made several stretches of roads slippery, increasing the risk of skidding and minor accidents. He said traffic could become slower or witness partial congestion at vulnerable locations if rainfall intensifies or visibility deteriorates.
Garauv Singh advised motorists to drive well within the prescribed speed limits, maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead and avoid unnecessary overtaking, particularly on Shimla’s narrow and winding roads. He said extra caution is required while negotiating sharp curves, steep gradients and road stretches passing through forested areas where the road surface often remains wet for longer periods.

The Superintendent of Police said Traffic Police personnel have been deployed at important junctions and vulnerable points across the city to regulate traffic and provide assistance to commuters. Traffic bike patrols are also monitoring road conditions and responding promptly to any traffic disruption.
A bus also broke down near Boileauganj. Taking prompt action by the Shimla Traffic Police, the vehicle was removed from the road and the route was fully reopened for traffic. Currently, traffic is operating normally and smoothly in Shimla City.
He urged tourists visiting the hill station to remain patient during peak traffic hours and cooperate with police personnel on duty. Drivers were also advised to ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy, especially the condition of tyres and braking systems, before undertaking travel in rainy weather.
The police appealed to commuters to stay updated through official traffic advisories issued on social media and to plan their journeys accordingly. Motorists were also requested to avoid roadside parking at narrow stretches that could obstruct traffic movement during the tourist season.
