Khans of Shimla are the city lifeline. Picking heavy loads, tree cutting, gas supplies, rescuing stranded in snow/rain all tasks are successfully accomplished by these Kashmiris. Yet in the time of pendamic they were given step motherly treatment by the city authorities. First these Khans made news, when 130 people residing in the city Masjid were provided lesser rations. The issue swelled to the extent that lone leftist MLA Rakesh Singha sat on a dharna at DC office. The MLA even appealed for permission to be given to them for returning home. Thereafter even though the ‘Khans’ were given permission to return home but were not offered any support. Whereby the state authorities could send 9 HRTC buses for the kids stranded at Kota, they could not make arrangements for the ‘Kashmiri’ friends.
Reportedly the Khans after getting permission to return home organized 6 mini buses from their own money. Keeping in mind social distancing rules these 6 buses were not enough for the 168 people, but in lacking support of the city authorities the poor Khans had no option.
