Shimla, October 12
Former BJP MLA Attar Singh Bhadana, father of Himachal Pradesh cadre IAS officer and Lahaul-Spiti Deputy Commissioner Kiran Bhadana, allegedly died following a brutal assault linked to a long-standing dispute over a stone crusher and mining lease in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan.
According to information shared by a Himachal Pradesh government officer, Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, who attended a Congress protest in Delhi against the Supreme Court today, also condoled Bhadana’s death and called for a thorough investigation into the alleged assault and circumstances leading to his demise.
The 68-year-old former legislator was reportedly attacked with sticks and stones at Bhondra village in the Bayana area of Bharatpur district. His office was allegedly vandalised during the incident. He sustained serious injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he succumbed. His associate, Gagan Sharma, was also reported to be critically injured.
Preliminary reports suggest that the incident stemmed from a protracted dispute between Bhadana and local villagers over a stone crusher plant and mining lease acquired around four years ago. Villagers had allegedly objected to the use of grazing land, blasting activities and access to the crusher site. The dispute had reportedly led to confrontations in the past.
According to reports citing the post-mortem findings, Bhadana suffered a serious head injury, fractures in his legs and multiple injuries to his body. His family subsequently took his body to his native village of Pali in Faridabad, Haryana, for the last rites.
Bharatpur Superintendent of Police Rajesh Meena said police teams had been constituted following the incident and an investigation was underway.
Bhadana had represented the Bayana Assembly constituency in Rajasthan after winning the 2003 election on a BJP ticket. He later left the BJP over differences concerning the Gurjar reservation movement and contested the 2008 Assembly election on a Congress ticket, which he lost. He subsequently returned to the BJP.
- The alleged killing has brought renewed attention to the long-running local dispute over the mining operation. The circumstances of the assault, the role of those involved and the sequence of events leading to Bhadana’s death remain matters for police investigation.
