Media Tycoon seeks defamation remedy in Himachal Pradesh HC
Shimla, June 23
Media Tycoon Raj Kamal Jah of Indian Express has sought remedy in a litigation or libel matter from the Himachal Pradesh High court. The renowned Editor of Indian Express newspapers is currently involved in a peculiar defamation case in the Himachal Pradesh High Court. The matter was brought before Justice Virender Singh, a single judge bench, on Friday.
During the hearing, the respondent, a high-profile functionary of the Himachal Pradesh Public Service Commission, requested additional time to file a reply to the petition. The court granted the request and adjourned the hearing until August 18, 2023, issuing a one-page order.
Previously, the respondent’s counsel had sought an extension to file the reply. In today’s order, Justice Virender Singh directed the respondent to file their reply on or before the next date of the hearing, which is scheduled for August 18, 2023. The interim stay order, which was previously granted, will continue until then.
On May 19, 2023, Raj Kamal Jha obtained relief in the defamation case when Justice Jyotsna Rewal Dua, another single judge bench of the High Court, stayed the impugned orders of the Shimla sub judge court dated August 1, 2022, and March 15, 2023, which were issued against the petitioner.
In this unusual case in the history of Indian journalism, the petitioner, Raj Kamal Jha, claims to have been wrongly implicated as an accused in a story that the newspaper never published.
