Intense heat continued to grip large parts of Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday with Una recording the highest maximum temperature in the state at a scorching 43.2 degrees Celsius.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said maximum temperatures remained above normal across most parts of the state, although no significant change was observed during the past 24 hours.
Several districts witnessed temperatures hovering close to or above the 38-degree mark. Neri in Hamirpur recorded 39.9°C, Mandi and Kangra 38.5°C each, Sundernagar 38.4°C, Berthin in Bilaspur 38°C, Bhuntar 36.4°C, Nahan 36.1°C, Chamba 35.4°C and Dharamshala 35°C.
In the higher reaches, Shimla recorded 28.3°C, Manali 28°C, Tabo 25.2°C, Keylong 23.9°C, Kalpa 23.7°C and Kufri 23°C. Average maximum temperatures across the state were 2.3 degrees Celsius above normal.
The weather office noted that despite isolated rainfall activity in some parts of the state during the previous 24 hours, hot weather conditions persisted in the lower and mid-hill districts.
Una recorded a departure of 4.8 degrees Celsius above normal, highlighting the intensity of the prevailing heat wave-like conditions.
Relief, however, is expected soon. A fresh Western Disturbance is likely to affect the Western Himalayan region from June 11, leading to an increase in thunderstorm activity.
The IMD has forecast thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds at isolated places across Himachal Pradesh over the next few days. Hailstorms are also likely at isolated locations on June 11 and 12.
The Meteorological Department has advised residents to take precautions against heat-related illnesses and urged farmers, tourists and travelers to remain alert to sudden weather changes as the approaching Western Disturbance is expected to bring a significant shift in weather conditions across the state.
