Delay in teacher recruitment may risk future of number of students in CBSE schools: SFI
Shimla, June 10,
Students Federation of India (SFI) has accused the Himachal Pradesh government of playing with the future of thousands of students by delaying teacher recruitment in the newly converted CBSE-affiliated government schools across the state.
In a press statement, SFI State President Anil Thakur said that the situation in 151 government schools brought under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) system has become serious, as regular teaching activities have yet to begin even three months after the commencement of the new academic session.
He alleged that neither CBSE curriculum books have been supplied to students nor have adequate teachers been appointed, leaving the academic future of thousands of students uncertain.
According to SFI, the state government had promised quality education through the conversion of schools to the CBSE pattern, a move that attracted a large number of admissions. The organisation claimed that enrolment in these schools increased from nearly 50 per cent to 90 per cent. In Mandi district alone, around 12,000 new students reportedly took admission following the announcement.
The student body pointed out that 11,294 teachers had applied for recruitment in the CBSE sub-cadre and 9,828 candidates appeared in the screening examination conducted for the purpose. However, despite the completion of the selection process, appointments have not been made so far.
SFI alleged that instead of making appointments on the basis of merit through the screening test, the government is considering filling vacancies through transfers from other schools. It claimed that the proposal has faced opposition from teachers, resulting in further delays in staffing the institutions.
“The government hurriedly converted a large number of schools to the CBSE system without adequate groundwork and planning. As a result, the education of thousands of students has suffered,” the organisation stated.
SFI State Secretary Sunny Sekta demanded immediate appointment of teachers on the basis of merit and early distribution of CBSE textbooks to ensure that regular classes begin without further delay.
The organisation warned that it would launch a state-wide agitation if the government fails to streamline academic activities and complete teacher recruitment at the earliest.
