Shimla, Jan 7,
Himachal Pradesh witnessed heavy snowfall and rainfall on Monday, causing widespread disruption across the state. Kufri recorded 5 cm of snowfall, Gondla in Lahaul Spiti received 4 mm, and Keylong saw 1 cm of fresh snow. Rainfall was also significant, with Pandoh in Mandi receiving 22 mm, Gohar 15 mm, Banjar 12.2 mm, Karsog 6.2 mm, Shimla 1.6 mm, and Bhuntar, Manali, and Sarahan registering lesser amounts.
The inclement weather has led to treacherous road conditions, stranding hundreds of vehicles in late-night traffic jams, especially in key districts like Shimla, Lahaul Spiti, and Kullu. The Atal Tunnel saw severe disruptions, with only four-wheel-drive vehicles equipped with snow chains permitted to pass. The administration worked relentlessly to evacuate stranded tourists, but freezing conditions and slippery roads posed significant challenges.
Dense fog further compounded travel difficulties, reducing visibility to just 50 meters in Bilaspur and 100 meters in Una and Mandi. Shallow fog was reported in Sundernagar with visibility down to 600 meters.
Temperatures across the state have plummeted, with the maximum temperature dropping by 4°C in the past 24 hours. Una recorded the highest maximum temperature at 23.4°C, while Keylong was the coldest with a minimum temperature of -2.5°C. Other notable minimum temperatures included Shimla at 4.2°C, Manali at -0.1°C, Kalpa at -3°C, and Dharamshala at 6.2°C.
The fresh snowfall, while offering picturesque views, has caused widespread disruptions to daily life. Farmers are facing delays in agricultural activities, and local businesses are struggling with logistical challenges. Tourists, although captivated by the snow-clad landscapes, are grappling with harsh cold and limited mobility.
The weather department has forecast clear skies for the next four days, providing temporary relief. However, it has issued warnings of potential snowfall in high-altitude areas from January 11, and dense fog in the plains on January 7 and 8 is expected to complicate travel further.
Residents have been advised to exercise caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and brace for an intensified cold wave, with temperatures predicted to dip by another 2-3°C in the coming days. While the state continues recovery efforts, authorities remain on alert for any further disruptions caused by adverse weather conditions.
