Established in 1995, the Department of Bio-Technology (DBT) at Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) is surging towards academic excellence in the Studies Research and Extension Bio-Technology in India. The Department rated as B++ by DBT through a survey conducted by Biotech Consortium India Limited (BCIL) and placed this tiny hill state University among top ten bio-Technology Institutes of the Country, disclosed Vice-Chancellor Prof. Sikander Kumar here today.
Prof. Kumar said that the Department of Bio-Technology, Government of India has approved the Post Graduate M.Sc. Bio-Technology Program for HP University with intake of 30 and total financial assistance of about Rs. 6 (six) Crores for five year starting from the academic session 2020-21.
He further said that doing this course, students will get Rupees Five Thousand studentship for two years and in addition to this for every student of final year Rupees Fifty Thousand project grant will also be provided by DBT which will help them to emerge as future entrepreneurs. This department has produced excellent alumni working all across the Globe in Universities, R&D Institutes, IITs, IISc, Industries, Govt., and also few have set up their Business Ventures in India & abroad, he added.
Prof. Arvind Kumar Bhatt, the Coordinator of this ambitious and multipurpose PG teaching program said that the mode of the selection for 30 seats would be through All India Entrance Test “GAT-B (DBT-RCB)” with eligibility of 10+2+3 system of education in life science, biological, physical, agricultural, Veterinary and fishery science, Pharmacy, Engineering and Technology, 4 years B.Sc.(Physical Assistant Course), MLT, Medicine (MBBS, BDS) having at least 50% marks.
Prof. Bhatt further said as a result of sincere efforts by each and every faculty member, technical and ministerial staff under the dynamic leadership of Vice Chancellor, the students of this Department have excelled in many spheres and this year all the final year students have qualified GATE – 2020 and three have qualified NET/JRF, One of our last year student Nancy was selected for Indian Institute of Science Bangalore and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, two more students qualified TIFR, two students joined PhD in JNU and others have also been placed. He said that HPU have honour to have all India GATE topper and few successful entrepreneurs in India (Unnati Foods Talwara – Jyoti Swaroop) and Dr.Jitendra Khatri in Boston, USA besides many representing the University in MNCs and Educational and R&D Institutions i.e. Central and State Universities IITs, NITs, National Research Labs, CSIR, DRDO, NII, NABI, AIIMS, and also other higher positions in Biocon, BBIL, NOVOZYME, E-Merck, Xcelris, Panacea Biotech, Premas, Dabur, Zhandu and several others.
Prof. Arvind emphasized that the Department aims for Development of trained manpower in Biotechnology in general, Research & Development activities for development of Himachal Pradesh, Ready to work manpower for Biotechnology based Industries, R&D Institutes, Promotion of Entrepreneurial skills in multidisciplinary areas of Biotechnology for innovative and R&D and Business activities. For this the State Govt. (Industry Deptt.) supported Biotechnology Incubation centre has also been adding to the achievements of the Department where out of 32, 22 Incubatees have been working for last three years and five of them are at final stage of product launching and other are slowly catching up. The generous help for BIC-HPU through State Govt. will help the incubatees to start their business establishments and emerge as Job Providers to strengthen the state and the society.
