Shimla, Feb 23
In a laudable move by the state Government it took a strong exception on an alleged attempt to use the name of cultural genre for popularizing a liquor brand by the manufacturer. A Spokesperson of State Taxes and Excise Department informed here today that it has been brought to the notice of the department on 19th February,2021 through the media, that cultural sentiments of certain sections of society have been hurt by the use of picture of Nati on the label of country liquor brand being sold in the State.
He said that whenever a brand of liquor is approved by the department, it is done by taking into consideration the sentiments of any religion or caste in the state. This brand has also been approved by the Department after completion of all legal formalities.
It is pertinent to mention here that in neighboring State of Punjab, brands depicting pictures of “Bhangra dhol” and having the name of “Punjabi Heer” are quite prevalent in the State. Similarly in Rajasthan, liquor is being sold in the market under the brand names “Ghumar” & “Dhola Maru” which holds very significant place in the cultural heritage of these states.
He said that although the approval to this brand has been given after considering all the legal aspects, however keeping in view the sentiments of the people, the approval of picture of Nati on the label of this particular brand has been withdrawn by the Department with immediate effect.
