Shimla, June 11
: After days of intense heatwave-like conditions across Himachal Pradesh, widespread pre-monsoon showers on Thursday evening brought significant relief to residents and farmers alike.
Light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunder, lightning and strong winds, lashed several parts of Shimla and Solan districts around 7:30 pm, causing temperatures to plunge sharply after a scorching day.
The sudden change in weather came as a welcome respite from the prolonged spell of hot and dry conditions that had gripped the state over the past week.

Earlier in the day, Una recorded a blistering 43.2 degrees Celsius, while temperatures hovered around 38-40 degrees Celsius in several lower and mid-hill districts.
Dark clouds enveloped the skies over Shimla, Solan and adjoining areas during the evening, followed by rain and gusty winds that brought down temperatures considerably. The showers marked the first widespread pre-monsoon activity in many areas and raised hopes of further weather relief in the coming days.
The rainfall also ended a prolonged dry spell that had triggered acute water shortages, particularly affecting irrigation systems in rural areas. Farmers, who had been anxiously waiting for rain to begin sowing off-season vegetables and Kharif crops, welcomed the showers. Agricultural experts said the rainfall would help improve soil moisture and facilitate preparatory farming activities ahead of the monsoon season.
The weather also impacted the ongoing Shimla Summer Festival at the historic Ridge.
A large gathering had assembled to enjoy cultural programmes when rain interrupted the festivities. Punjabi singer Bullar was performing before a packed audience when showers forced spectators to seek shelter, briefly disrupting the programme.
The India Meteorological Department has forecast further thunderstorm activity, lightning and gusty winds at isolated places across Himachal Pradesh over the next few days under the influence of a fresh Western Disturbance. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during periods of intense weather activity.
